A pretty young nurse Brandon hadn’t seen before hurried into his room, and gave him a smile. “Your ride’s here,” she announced. She helped him into a wheelchair that he’d argued was unnecessary, but had been overruled by hospital policy for discharges, then handed him his crutches so he could carry them across his lap. After releasing the handbrake, she wheeled him into the hallway and Brandon smiled, expecting to see Randy. His smile faltered when his eyes met Joe’s hard, whiskey-brown gaze.

“Where’s Randy?”

Joe didn’t answer his question. He strode around to the back of the chair and pushed it past the nurses’ station.

“Be seeing you,” the pretty nurse said to Joe with a wink. Two of the other nurses made small waves, but no one was looking at the departing patient.

Brandon rolled his eyes. Joe could charm the stars from the sky if he wanted to, and evidently the nursing staff wasn’t immune. It was a good thing Brandon was. And despite his resolution to start a fresh working relationship with Joe, it didn’t mean he had to put up with buckets of attitude.

“I asked you where Randy was. He was supposed to pick me up.”

“I guess he had more important things to do,” Joe told him flatly as he stopped at the elevator door to push the button. “I was available.”

Brandon sighed. “Just push me back to the nurses’ station. I’m calling a cab to take me home.”

Joe acted as if he didn’t hear him. The double doors swished open and he wheeled Brandon inside before jabbing the button for the main floor.

Anger coiled up then unfurled in his chest. “Ah, hell no,” Brandon said. He used the arms of the chair to push himself up to his feet, then juggled the crutches to get them under his arms while still holding on to the small bag of his belongings. Pain shot through his ankle and up his leg. His head swam, and he sucked in a breath. Then he gritted his teeth and got his balance. It was obvious Joe hadn’t gotten the memo about working together—but that little talk would have to wait for another day. Joe Martinez was not going to bully him around—Brandon refused to be trapped in the truck with this angry, hard man all the way back to Goldview and beyond to the ranch.

No way.

“What the hell are you doing?” Joe snapped. A big hand landed on Brandon’s shoulder. “Sit your ass back down before you hurt yourself.”

Brandon jerked away as the doors opened. “I’m already hurt, asshole. Not that you’d give a shit,” Brandon sniped. “Tell Randy I said thank you, and I’ll call him to make arrangements to pay him for his trouble last night.”

Without looking back, he set a rhythm going forward out of the elevator on the crutches and had gone a few yards when Joe’s hand landed on his shoulder again, nearly knocking him over.

“Randy doesn’t need your fucking money and neither do I,” he growled.

“I wasn’t offering you any money—you didn’t do anything.
